The Department of Foreign Trade announced a ban on the export of rosewood and products, starting from 16 August 2023.

Specify rosewood as a prohibited product, and some types of logs, processed wood, and potted wood as products that require permission.

Ban on rosewood exports

Mr. Ronnarong Poolpipat, Director-General of the Department of Foreign Trade, revealed that the Department of Foreign Trade has issued two announcements of the Ministry of Commerce regarding the import and export of wood products, which are minor changes from the previous announcements of the Ministry of Commerce to be consistent with the current situation of wood trade and to reduce the complexity and difficulty of importing and exporting goods.

In this regard, another announcement of the Ministry of Commerce regarding the export of wood abroad in 2023 and products has been issued, which will be effective from August 16, 2023 onwards, namely the announcement of the Ministry of Commerce on the designation of rosewood as a prohibited product, logs, processed wood and some types of potted wood as products requiring permission, and wood inventions and charcoal as products requiring a certificate for export outside the Kingdom in 2023, which has the following important points:

The export of rosewood and products is prohibited in all cases, while logs, processed wood and some types of potted wood can be exported but must request permission, including wood products and charcoal, which can be exported by presenting an export certificate.

“Those who wish to export timber must comply with the Ministry of Commerce’s regulations on permission to export certain types of logs, processed timber and potted timber outside the Kingdom, B.E. 2566, which the Minister of Commerce has signed and is currently in the process of being published in the Royal Gazette.

Exporters can only contact the Royal Forest Department to apply for an export license, along with supporting documents as required by the Royal Forest Department, such as invoices, product photos, and supporting documents showing that the wood was legally obtained, etc.”

In addition, the Department of Foreign Trade has also issued a Ministry of Commerce announcement regarding imports, Ministry of Commerce Announcement on the designation of logs, processed wood, and wood products as prohibited goods or requiring a certificate for import into the Kingdom, B.E. 2566.

which has been in effect since 17 July 2023 onwards, with the main content being a ban on the import of rosewood logs, processed rosewood, and rosewood handicrafts from Cambodia and Lao PDR.

It is prohibited to import logs through the customs checkpoints of Tak, Kanchanaburi and Mae Hong Son provinces, and it is prohibited to import processed wood through the customs checkpoints of Mae Hong Son province. However, logs, processed wood and wood products other than those mentioned above can be imported by presenting a certificate of origin or evidence of permission to export to support the import procedures.
