Which is the largest consumer of Thai durian in the world.
On February 8, 2023, Mr. Sinith Lertkrai, Deputy Minister of Commerce, revealed that the Department of Intellectual Property announced that “Yala Sadet Nam Durian” is a new Geographic Indication (GI) product.
Yala Province helps stimulate the export of Thai fruits to foreign markets, especially China and Malaysia, in line with the policy of strengthening the Thai community economy and distributing income to small farmers.
Yala durian is famous for its distinctive taste, sweet and creamy, dry, fine flesh, few fibers, unique smell, and light or dark yellow flesh depending on the variety, including Kan Yao, Chanee, Phuang Mani, Musang King, and Nam Dam or Ochee. It can be grown all year round.
Grown in areas above sea level from 100 meters and above, along the hillsides, the produce can be harvested during July-September of each year with a unique taste and smell.
This makes the price of Yala Sadet Nam durian as high as 190 baht/kg, generating income for the people of Yala as much as 2,800 million baht per year. Coupled with the strength of the local farmer groups who work together to develop product quality and packaging, this makes “Yala Sadet Nam durian” another important source of income for Yala, after
“Banana Hin Ban Nang Sata” which was previously registered as a GI
Therefore, the registration of GI for Yala Sadet Nam durian is an important step in raising the standard of Thai agricultural products to the eyes of the world, creating added value, creating jobs and income for community enterprise entrepreneurs and farmers in the area sustainably.
