Logistics business and statistics of Thai border and cross-border trade in the first 5 months (January – May) compared to 2019, decreased by more than 10% due to the effects of COVID-19, which resulted in the closure of all Thai border crossings nationwide, from 97 points to only 28 points, resulting in a decrease in the total trade value.

Total value of 524,357 million baht, down 9.71%, divided into exports of 305,725 million baht, down 9.03%, and imports of 218,632 million baht, down 10.65%, resulting in a trade surplus of 87,093 million baht.

Statistics of Thailand’s border trade with neighboring countries show that Malaysia has a total trade value of 87,854 million baht, a decrease of 32.43%, Lao PDR has a value of 77,172 million baht, a decrease of 6.59%, Myanmar has a value of 73,740 million baht, a decrease of 10.96%.

And only Cambodia saw its trade value increase by 5.20% to 70,872 million baht, with the products that increased being non-alcoholic beverages, livestock products, and passenger cars, etc.

In terms of cross-border trade by country, it was found that China had a trade value of 90,740 million baht, an increase of 15.74% from products such as fresh fruit, rubber, and computers, Singapore had a value of 36,102 million baht, an increase of 20.83%.

From combustion engine products, computers and electrical circuit boards, Vietnam, valued at 24,697 million baht, down 26.71%, and other countries, total value at 63,180 million baht, down 16.85%.

In the second half of 2020, there is a tendency for it to improve as the situation has improved. It may just be waiting for consideration of opening additional trade borders.

In July, the number of checkpoints opened increased from 28 to 37 out of a total of 97. The Department of Foreign Trade will push for more checkpoints to be opened.
