Strict controls on durian production, including “pre-harvest inspections,” are being implemented to boost exports by 2026, with an expected production of 1.85 million tons.
Thailand is preparing to enter its eastern durian production season between March and July 2026. The total production this year is projected to reach 1,850,220 tons, an increase from last year due to a larger area yielding its first harvest, higher yields per acre, and favorable weather conditions for flowering and fruiting.
Due to the increasing production trend, strict quality control measures are being emphasized to ensure that durian produce meets standards, build confidence among consumers both domestically and internationally, and support the expansion of the export market.
The “pre-cut inspection” measure elevates quality from the source.
This year’s key guidelines are: “Inspection before harvesting, orchard organization, safe production processes, and ensuring the quality of Eastern durian.”
Farmers are required to analyze the ripeness level of durian before harvesting using dry weight analysis according to the durian agricultural product standard (TIS 3-2567) to ensure transparent traceability of quality from farm to market.
There are testing and analysis service points at the district level, including mobile service units, to facilitate farmers.
Organize the garden and raise standards before the season opens.
Prior to the harvest season, activities are organized to improve the quality of orchards, such as Big Cleaning Day events, to raise awareness of plant hygiene and sanitary (SPS) measures for export products.
Farmers gained knowledge on important topics such as:
- Garden hygiene management
- Proper use of GAP (Good Agricultural Practice) certification.
- Preventing identity theft.
- Adapting to climate change.
Technology, innovation, and safety control.
The development guidelines also include:
- The use of technology and innovation in agriculture.
- Cleaning and sanitizing harvesting containers and tools.
- Collecting samples of soil, water, and contact surfaces at high-risk locations.
- Testing for heavy metals in soil, especially cadmium, is crucial for meeting export standards.
This includes integrated pest management, proper control of chemical use according to technical recommendations, and consistent recording of production data to reduce the risk of biological, chemical, and physical contamination.
Pushing towards international competition.
Modernizing durian production not only enhances competitiveness in the global market but also has positive impacts on the environment and the long-term sustainability of the agricultural sector.
This approach aims to create a standardized, safe, and traceable production system to build confidence in international markets and promote Thai durian to gain global recognition.
Stay updated with new knowledge through Live Streaming.
Those interested can follow the program “Lab Network: Quality Orchard Classroom,” which transmits knowledge from real fruit orchards to systematically improve quality.
The event will be broadcast via live streaming from February to March 2026 on Facebook, providing farmers, producer networks, and interested parties with the opportunity to learn about the concepts, work processes, and sustainable farm development to meet established standards.
