Thailand's rice and cassava exports in the first quarter of 2023 continued to expand well, with rice exports totaling 2.06 million tons.
Mr. Ronnarong Poolpipat, Director-General of the Department of Foreign Trade, Ministry of Commerce, revealed that Thailand’s rice and cassava exports in the first quarter of 2023 continued to expand well. Rice exports amounted to 2.06 million tons, an increase of 18.48% or 321,625 tons from the same period of 2022.
While the value is 38,066 million baht, an increase of 29.26% or 8,616 million baht, with the main export market being Iraq, accounting for 16.38% of the total Thai rice export volume, followed by Indonesia at 13.08%, the United States at 8.62%, South Africa at 8.24% and Senegal at 5.86%.
The reason for the significant increase in rice exports is because countries in Asia and Africa, such as Indonesia, Bangladesh, Iraq, South Africa, and Senegal, continue to import rice to meet their domestic rice demand and maintain food security.
In addition, in 2023, the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives predicts that the amount of Thai rice production will increase from sufficient water. The second-crop rice production will be released to the market in large quantities during March – April 2023, making the price of Thai rice competitive, even though the price of Thai white rice is still about $60 per ton higher than Vietnam.
Cassava product exports amounted to 3.29 million tons, up from the same period in 2022.
Previously 7.17% or 220,000 tons, while the value was 39,982.93 million baht, an increase of 4.81% or 1,834.15 million baht.
